Mill Street

Built in 1877, the Haines-Reid House is a proud example of Victorian farmhouse design and a designated heritage property in the village of Cheltenham. Mark and Emily sought to breathe new life into the home while carefully preserving and restoring the historic architecture and character that define its 150 year old legacy.

Renovation Highlights

  • Mechanical Upgrades: The home’s original knob-and-tube wiring and cast-iron plumbing were replaced with modern systems. Remarkably, this was achieved without disturbing the lathe-and-plaster walls, maintaining the historical integrity of the interior. A steam humidifier was also added to the existing furnace.

  • Architectural Detailing: Paneled mouldings were added throughout the main floor, while custom cabinetry was crafted for the office, bar, and living room to reflect period charm. A tin ceiling in the office was installed and painted to blend seamlessly with the surrounding walls and trim. Any new baseboard, casing, crown moulding and interior doors were custom-milled to match the home’s original profiles. Instead of replacing the interior hardware, the original knobs and latch systems were carefully removed, restored, and refinished to bring back their original character.

  • Flooring: Carpet was removed to reveal the original pine subfloors, which were sanded and stained to brighten each space while showcasing the home’s authentic materials.

  • Finishes & Palette: Bathroom and bar tiles were chosen to echo the late 19th-century period, while walls and trim were painted in rich, historically inspired tones from Farrow & Ball’s heritage collection.

The next phase of the renovation will expand the kitchen to include a mudroom and sunroom, add a second-storey primary suite with ensuite and closet and relocate the laundry room to the upper floor. This next chapter will continue blending heritage character with modern living. Stay tuned!
